How To Build A Vivarium

How To Build A Vivarium. I thought it was time my corn snakes had a new vivarium, and not liking to spend much money i set about building one myself using an old computer desk.

The vivarium that i ended up with after my efforts turned out to be pretty good. The following photos give you some idea as to how i went about building a vivarium for the snakes.

I started off with the computer desk that was destined for the rubbish site.

Inside the desk there was a box compartment at the bottom and two shelves, one of which was a sliding shelf. I left the box at the bottom and the rigid shelf, but removed the sliding one and refitted it without the runners, making it rigid also.

I removed the doors and screwed them to the back of the desk.

I fitted two pieces of wood to the top and bottom at the front, for the plastic runners that the sliding doors fit into, you have to work out what the distance is vertically between the runners, in order to allow the glass doors a little freedom to slide freely, i use pieces of wood cut to the thickness needed and place them under the plastic runners. This way i can adjust the thickness of the wood if need be.

The plastic runners and glass doors were taken from the old vivarium that the corn snakes were in. You can buy the runners from most hardware stores, the glass is 6mm thick and i bought that when i built the first viv, from what i can remember it cost about £30 for the two pieces of glass.

I then added wood around where the doors are fitted to take up the space that the glass doesn’t go to. And using the old thin trim from the back of the desk i attached it to the wood, to make it look a little tidier.

The end result was a vivarium that looked reasonable and cost virtually nothing to make.
